Takashi Yamazaki’s Grandgear has announced its first cast members. The mech action film will be the Japanese director’s first English-language production, following his acclaimed work on Godzilla Minus One.

Sam Nivola and Nico Parker are set to appear in the film, while Paul Giamatti is in talks to join them. The casting news was reported by Deadline.
Nivola is known for The White Lotus. Parker starred alongside Woody Harrelson in Suncoast, a performance that earned her a Breakthrough Performance Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Giamatti’s three-decade career includes a Golden Globe win and several Academy Award nominations. He is also attached to the upcoming film The Debut with Julianne Moore.
What we know about Grandgear

Yamazaki became internationally recognised after directing Godzilla Minus One, the 2023 Japanese kaiju film that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. He wrote the screenplay, directed the production and led its visual effects team.
His next Godzilla film, Godzilla Minus Zero, is scheduled to open in Japan on 3 November 2026, followed by a North American release on 6 November 2026.
Grandgear was announced in 2024 as Yamazaki’s English-language debut. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing, while Sony Pictures secured distribution rights after a competitive bidding process.

Story details remain secret. However, footage shown at CinemaCon 2026 featured two giant mechs battling, suggesting a large-scale robot action film with a similar broad appeal to Pacific Rim.
Release plans and the arcade connection
Yamazaki is writing and directing Grandgear, which is currently scheduled for release in February 2028. For Australian fans of mechanical action, the project sits comfortably alongside the spectacle of classic arcade shooters, robot fighters and giant-monster games.
Those themes have long shaped coin-operated entertainment, from screen-filling bosses to tactile controls built for intense battles. Explore more stories in the RETROCADE Arcade Blog, or browse arcade machines for cabinets suited to home game rooms.

For fans building a themed game room
A giant-robot film can also inspire a broader gaming setup. A compact bartop arcade works well where space is limited, while a DIY arcade kit offers more control over the cabinet’s design and presentation.
There is still plenty of time before Grandgear reaches cinemas, and further casting or plot information may clarify how Yamazaki approaches his first English-language production.
