Sydney Sweeney’s Gundam film takes shape

The live-action Gundam project has been developing in some form since 2018, but specific story details have remained scarce despite its announced cast and creative team. That has now changed slightly, with actor Noah Centineo offering a glimpse of the film’s direction.

Centineo, who is also known for his role in Street Fighter, described the production as a “big action romance space movie”. He also compared it to “a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in space”, suggesting a story about lovers caught on opposing sides of a long-running conflict.

That premise would fit the broader Mobile Suit Gundam tradition, particularly its recurring focus on the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon in the Universal Century timeline.

What the official synopsis says

The film’s early official synopsis points to shifting loyalties, a major threat and a race across the stars with humanity’s future at stake.

As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before.

Universal Century setting confirmed

Centineo confirmed that the live-action film will be set in the Universal Century, the timeline used by many of the franchise’s best-known anime series and films, including the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

The precise point in that timeline has not been revealed. Concept art released in 2021 featured the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam from the original series, although that artwork was produced while Jordan Vogt-Roberts was attached to direct. Vogt-Roberts was later replaced by Jim Mickle.

More Gundam projects are coming
