All Eight Eeveelutions Ranked From Worst to Best

Eight Eeveelutions, eight very different battle styles — and one ranking that is guaranteed to start an argument. Here is our subjective order of Eevee’s evolutions, from the weakest overall pick to the standout favourite.

Eevee first appeared as a Normal-type Pokémon in Pokémon Red and Blue. Its unusual ability to evolve into eight forms, each with a different type, has made it one of the franchise’s most recognisable creatures and an excellent way to explore contrasting strategies.

The appeal extends beyond the video games. Eeveelutions are major attractions in the Pokémon TCG, where cards such as the most valuable Eeveelution cards have become prized collector pieces. This order is subjective, so every fan is entitled to disagree.

8. Glaceon

Glaceon has an elegant Ice-type design and an impressive base Special Attack of 130, but it finishes last here because the other seven offer more appealing combinations of style, usefulness and battle identity.

It debuted in Generation Four’s Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. Originally, Eevee had to be levelled near the Ice Rock south of Snowpoint City on Sinnoh’s Route 217. Later games made the process easier with an Ice Stone, including more recent entries such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

7. Leafeon

Leafeon is a close call for last place. Its Grass-type design is appealing, and some collectors will understandably rank it much higher. Its Alternate Art Leafeon V from Evolving Skies and the Galarian Gallery version of Leafeon VSTAR from Crown Zenith are particularly attractive cards.

Glaceon may be the stronger offensive Pokémon, thanks to its Special Attack and reasonable bulk, but Leafeon’s visual identity gives it the edge in this personal ranking.

6. Flareon

Flareon is one of Eevee’s original three evolutions, but its performance in the games has often been less convincing than its fiery appearance suggests. A base Attack of 130 is formidable, yet middling Speed and an inconsistent movepool limit its impact.

Its original Jungle TCG card remains a highlight, with artwork that arguably surpasses the set’s Vaporeon and Jolteon cards. Even so, Flareon’s design and battle role feel less distinctive than those of its Kanto counterparts and the later evolutions.

5. Sylveon

Generation Six’s Pokémon X and Y introduced Sylveon and brought the Fairy type to the Eeveelution family. Its Pixilate ability adds another useful layer to its battle potential.

The exact evolution method has changed, but the essentials remain friendship or affection, plus knowledge of a Fairy-type move when Eevee levels up. Earlier games used Pokémon-Amie, while newer titles generally use high friendship. With its ribbons, blue eyes and charming design, Sylveon has a strong claim to being the cutest Eeveelution.

4. Vaporeon

Vaporeon occupies the middle of the list because it combines a memorable design with dependable in-game durability. Its base HP is 130 and its base Special Defence is 95, giving it the bulk to absorb punishment while still dealing respectable damage.

As Eevee’s Water-type evolution, Vaporeon resembles a graceful blend of fox and mermaid. The concept is simple, but the fin, tail and aquatic details make it an unmistakable member of the original trio.

3. Jolteon

Jolteon is the fastest Eeveelution and a classic glass cannon. Its base Special Attack of 110 lets it hit hard, while its Speed helps it act before many opponents. The drawback is severe physical fragility, including a base HP stat of only 65.

That risk is part of the appeal. Jolteon’s electrically charged, spiky design is distinctive, and using it is rewarding as long as you avoid letting it take too many hits. Collectors also prize cards such as the Jolteon Gold Star.

2. Umbreon

Introduced in Generation Two’s Gold and Silver, Umbreon added the Dark type to Eevee’s branching evolution line. It evolves when a highly friendly Eevee levels up at night.

Umbreon’s black coat, glowing yellow rings and excellent defensive statistics have made it a long-standing fan favourite. It is not an especially powerful attacker, and battles can take time, but its staying power and support options create a distinctive defensive play style.

That popularity is equally visible in the TCG. The Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art, commonly called “Moonbreon”, and the Umbreon ex Special Illustration Rare are highly sought-after modern chase cards. Both have sold for well into four figures ungraded, while pristine graded copies can command considerably more. One collector even traded a $130,000 car for a collection of miscut Evolving Skies cards featuring an unusual Umbreon VMAX.

1. Espeon

Espeon takes the top spot for its combination of design, speed and offensive power. The Psychic-type evolution has a base Special Attack of 130 — tied with Glaceon for the highest among Eeveelutions — and base Speed of 110, allowing it to strike quickly.

Umbreon is arguably the better defensive specialist, but Espeon’s ability to hit hard and fast is more satisfying in many in-game teams. Its Magic Bounce ability can also turn opposing status moves and entry hazards against the opponent.

Espeon has impressive TCG history, too. The Espeon ex from Unseen Forces and Holo Aquapolis Espeon remain notable collector targets. The latter comes from the early e-Reader era, the same period associated with the highly valued Crystal Lugia, which has tied a $360,000 auction record.

Every Eeveelution has its fans

Glaceon, Leafeon, Flareon, Sylveon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Umbreon and Espeon each bring a different type, look and strategy to the series. There may be no universally correct ranking, but that variety is precisely why Eevee remains such a flexible Pokémon icon.
