Spooky games without the nightmare fuel

October is an excellent month for horror fans, but enjoying Halloween atmosphere does not mean enjoying every scare. These five games offer eerie settings, strange creatures and supernatural themes while keeping gore, jump scares and outright terror to a minimum.

They are also a useful reminder that spooky games can work through humour, art direction, mystery and mood rather than relying solely on fear. If you are exploring different ways to enjoy games at home, the RETROCADE arcade blog has more gaming and arcade features.

1. Luigi’s Mansion 3

Where to play: Nintendo Switch

Luigi’s Mansion 3 follows Luigi through the seventeen floors of The Last Resort as he attempts to rescue Mario and Princess Peach from King Boo. Every part of the hotel has its own layout, soundtrack and puzzle design, from the gift shop to the fitness centre.

This is the clearest example of friendly, cartoon-style horror on the list. Luigi’s Poltergust, his ghostly dog Polterpup and the nervous hero himself make the haunted-house setting more playful than frightening. The game also features Gooigi, a green, goo-based Luigi double. For a similar emphasis on playful interaction, browse RETROCADE’s arcade machines.

2. Penko Park

Where to play: Nintendo Switch and Windows PC

Penko Park is a gentle photography adventure with an unusual cast. You travel by tram through a mysterious forest, searching for creatures and photographing them in different poses and moods. Its presentation recalls the illustrated look of a children’s book, even when the residents include a sea monster, a winged lemon and a spider-like character called Doug.

After each tram journey, your pictures are arranged in a scrapbook to earn XP. New tools then open access to more creatures and photo opportunities. With more than 100 creatures to discover, the game has plenty to offer beyond a single playthrough.

3. Hollow Knight

Where to play: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One

Hollow Knight combines demanding Metroidvania exploration with an atmospheric underground world. As the unnamed Knight, you platform and fight through the abandoned kingdom of Hallownest, uncovering its history as you go.

There are unsettling moments and occasional surprises, but the game avoids gore and conventional jump scares. Its carefully drawn 2D artwork gives the darkness a beautiful, storybook quality. That said, players with a serious fear of insects may find its bug-themed characters less comfortable than other entries here.

4. Monster Prom

Where to play: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One

Monster Prom turns the high-school slasher setup into a comic dating game. You play as a student at Spooky High with only a few weeks to find a prom date. Potential partners include Vera the gorgon, Scott the werewolf and Damien the demon.

Individual runs usually take between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your choices. Developer Beautiful Glitch fills the game with jokes and references, while its competitive mode lets friends compete for the attention of six romanceable monsters. It has the drama and visual language of a teen horror story, without the slashing.

5. Night in the Woods

Where to play: iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One

Night in the Woods is a character-led mystery about Mae, a college dropout who returns to her small hometown. The cast consists of anthropomorphic animals, but their relationships and problems are unmistakably human. Mae begins investigating a disturbing local secret while reconnecting with old friends.

The game places cute character designs against beautiful, eerie backgrounds. Its story explores depression, dissociation, economic hardship and isolation, mixing campfire-story fantasy with struggles that feel grounded in everyday life. Platforming and minigames support a largely dialogue-driven experience, while Mae’s decisions about which friends to spend time with shape the emotional journey. The conclusion remains satisfying regardless of those choices.

Choosing the right level of spooky

These games cover a broad range of low-intensity horror. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the most overtly comic, Penko Park is the gentlest, and Monster Prom treats monsters as the basis for comedy and romance. Hollow Knight delivers the strongest sense of danger, while Night in the Woods uses mystery and emotional realism to create unease.

For players who prefer hands-on arcade entertainment, RETROCADE also offers compact bartop arcades and arcade light-gun games for a different kind of play session.
