Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II has made a strong arrival on Netflix, reaching the top of the platform’s US movie chart within days of its 21 October debut.
The 2024 sequel first enjoyed a successful cinema release before moving to Paramount Plus. Its Netflix launch has now given the Roman epic a fresh audience, with Gladiator II displacing Ben Affleck’s divisive thriller Animals from the No. 1 position during its opening weekend.

Is Gladiator II worth watching?
The sequel faced a difficult comparison with the 2000 original, which has remained a highly regarded revenge story for more than two decades. The first film starred Russell Crowe as Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius and Joaquin Phoenix as Emperor Commodus, alongside Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou and Richard Harris.
Gladiator earned more than $460 million worldwide and became 2000’s second-highest-grossing film, behind John Woo’s Mission: Impossible 2. At the 2001 Academy Awards, it won Best Picture, Best Actor for Crowe, Best Sound and Best Costume Design.
Gladiator II does not match the original’s consistency, although its action has been praised for tighter fights and broader staging. Its large cast includes Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and Connie Nielsen, but the story has been criticised for not bringing its performers together in a consistently focused way.

What is Gladiator II about?
Set years after Maximus’s death, the film follows Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. After his home is conquered by Rome’s tyrannical emperors, Lucius is forced into the Colosseum and must draw on his past while seeking strength, honour and a better future for the empire.
The cast also features Pedro Pascal as General Acacius, Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla and Denzel Washington as Macrinus. Connie Nielsen returns as Lucilla. Scott directed from a screenplay by David Scarpa, based on a story by Peter Craig and Scarpa.
Will there be a Gladiator III?
Scott has indicated that another sequel may be in development. During a 2025 interview with The Guardian, the director was asked about a possible Gladiator 3 and replied that “Gladiator is in process right now”. No substantial further details about the project have been reported.

Scott has also delivered The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic film adapted from Peter Heller’s 2012 novel. Jacob Elordi plays Hig, one of the few survivors after a deadly virus devastates the planet. He lives at an old airfield with Bangley, a former marine played by Josh Brolin.
Hig has a secure base, supplies and companionship, but becomes fixated on a faint radio transmission from Grand Junction. The town is too far away to reach by plane on one tank of fuel, yet he eventually sets out across the Rocky Mountain West and encounters new allies.
Scott’s next announced adaptation is Treasure Island, based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel.
