Star Wars Funday Football brings C-3PO to Super Bowl LXI

Disney is planning a Star Wars-themed animated broadcast of Super Bowl LXI, giving viewers an alternative way to follow the biggest game on 14 February 2027.

Called Star Wars Funday Football, the special telecast will recreate the match in real time, turning the NFL players into animated characters. The production will use player-tracking information, optical tracking and data-visualisation technology from Sony’s Beyond Sports.
Disney also says Star Wars characters will enter the action at important moments. That could mean familiar figures taking part in plays, although the announcement does not specify exactly which characters will appear beyond C-3PO.
Anthony Daniels returns as C-3PO
Anthony Daniels, the original performer behind C-3PO, will provide the droid’s voice for the broadcast in some capacity. His return gives the event a direct connection to the classic films and their original cast.
The alternate presentation will be available on Disney Plus, Disney Channel and Disney XD. Super Bowl LXI will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and will mark the first Super Bowl broadcast carried by ESPN.

A busy year ahead for Star Wars
The football special is part of a significant 2027 for the franchise, which reaches its 50th anniversary. However, it will not be the year’s only major Star Wars event.
The original Star Wars film is scheduled to return to cinemas on 19 February 2027, including screenings in 70 mm IMAX. A few months later, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and led by Ryan Gosling, is due in cinemas on 28 May 2027.

Players looking for Star Wars gaming in the meantime have two new titles to watch. Star Wars Zero Company follows a group of operators during the Clone Wars, while Star Wars: Galactic Racer focuses on dangerous, high-speed racing across the Outer Rim.
Why the format suits arcade fans
A live, data-driven animated match sits naturally alongside the spectacle of the arcade news and gaming world. It combines sport, real-time visualisation and recognisable characters in a format designed for a shared screen.
For Australian households planning a dedicated games room, a full-size arcade machine can provide the centrepiece, while a compact bartop arcade suits smaller spaces. Fans drawn to the broadcast’s competitive energy may also want to compare racing simulators or explore an arcade light-gun shooter.
