How Imogen and Laudna’s Romance Transformed Critical Role Campaign 3

Content warning: spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 3.

Critical Role has built memorable romances across its Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, from the turbulent but tender relationship between Percival Del Rolo and Vex’ahlia in Campaign 1 to the slow-burning connection between Fjord Stone and Jester in Campaign 2.

Laura Bailey played a central role in both earlier relationships, bringing a willingness to challenge the direction of her characters. In Campaign 3, that instinct led to Imogen Temult and Laudna becoming one of the story’s defining partnerships.

Bailey discussed the relationship during a Founders Favorite interview for Critical Role’s streaming service, Beacon. Among the moments she selected, the growth of “Imodna” — the fan name for Imogen and Laudna’s romance — stood out as a turning point.

The beginning of Imodna

Bailey’s character, Imogen Temult, is a human sorcerer from the country whose psychic and telepathic abilities left her isolated from other people. Laudna, played by Marisha Ray, is an undead sorceress and warlock whose patron is Delilah Briarwood, the cruel necromancer known from Campaign 1 and The Legend of Vox Machina.

As members of Bells Hells, the pair found a supportive family among fellow outsiders. Their closeness was apparent from the beginning, although some viewers interpreted it as a sisterly bond rather than a romantic one.

That reading changed in episode 65, “Path of Vengeance”. After the two reunited, Imogen asked Laudna a simple but decisive question: “Can I kiss you?”

The scene surprised Bailey as much as it surprised many of her fellow cast members. She explained that the kiss was not planned and that Imogen acted because she suddenly had no idea what Laudna was thinking.

The timing carried considerable emotional weight. A catastrophic event had separated Bells Hells and sent its members to different parts of Exandria. Imogen and Laudna had been afraid for each other while dealing with revelations about the world and its gods, making their reunion especially intense.

Why the confession mattered

During their separation, Imogen gained a magical item that stopped her from hearing other people’s thoughts, including Laudna’s. After relying on that connection for so long, Imogen was suddenly unable to know how Laudna felt. Asking for a kiss became her leap into uncertainty.

The romance also deepened the campaign’s central themes. Imogen’s telepathy had often made other people’s thoughts exhausting, while Laudna’s presence brought her comfort. Laudna had been rejected because of her appearance and her unsettling Hollowed One abilities, but Imogen saw her as beautiful and wonderful.

For two people treated as outsiders, their relationship offered security. That emotional refuge helped make Imodna more than a side plot: it became part of Campaign 3’s wider story about identity, belonging and chosen family.

Imogen and Laudna face Delilah

Once the relationship was established, it had to survive the threat within Laudna herself. Delilah Briarwood’s influence meant that the couple rarely had complete privacy, while the necromancer continued to risk taking control of Laudna’s body.

That danger eventually shifted during episode 103, “Cages”. Bells Hells and Essek Thelyss trapped Delilah’s soul inside an anchor embedded in Laudna. Delilah was not permanently destroyed, but her immediate control over Laudna was removed.

The change allowed Imogen and Laudna to plan a future together. By the end of Campaign 3, they had achieved that future, although the details shown to viewers remained limited.

A quiet future for Imogen and Laudna

After further adventures with Bells Hells, Imogen and Laudna were understood to have settled in a quiet cottage and secretly married at some point after their last major Campaign 3 appearances.

Their story may not be finished. Bailey’s other major romances have received wedding one-shots, so an Imodna wedding special remains a possibility for a future Critical Role project. No such one-shot has been confirmed in the material covered here.

For now, Imogen and Laudna’s relationship remains one of Campaign 3’s most important narrative developments: an unplanned moment that grew into a lasting story about trust, acceptance and finding safety in another person.
