Joe Manganiello has spoken candidly about losing the chance to play Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s planned Batman film, a project that was cancelled before it reached production.

Manganiello’s Deathstroke appeared only in a post-credits scene from 2017’s Justice League, yet the casting quickly became one of the most widely praised elements of that era of DC films. He had been expected to face Affleck’s Batman in a standalone story, leaving fans to imagine the performance that never happened.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Manganiello described the film’s cancellation as devastating. “I lost my mind when that happened,” he said.

The actor explained that he was also dealing with an autoimmune disease while preparing for the role. Working towards playing Deathstroke had given him something meaningful to focus on during a difficult period.

“I took me being offered that role as the villain of Batman as the universe saying it’s gonna be okay. And when it went away, I didn’t have that to fight for anymore.”

Why the Batman project was abandoned

Manganiello eventually developed a different perspective on the setback. He said he initially viewed the cancellation as bad luck, but later came to believe the opportunity had still served an important purpose in his life.

“I came to understand through the full journey was that I was lucky to get it. It was never meant to be for me. It was there to make sure I didn’t stop fighting.”

Affleck has also discussed the strain surrounding Justice League and his experience developing the solo Batman film, which he was set to direct. Friends reportedly feared he would drink himself to death if he continued with the project. Affleck stepped down as director in 2017, and Matt Reeves later developed a separate version starring Robert Pattinson.

The abandoned film remains part of the wider history of arcade and gaming news, particularly for fans who followed the darker comic-book adaptations that influenced modern superhero games.

Could Manganiello return as Deathstroke?

James Gunn’s new DC Universe is moving ahead with several projects, including Savage Hunters, a planned Deathstroke and Bane film. Gunn has generally been reluctant to carry actors forward from earlier DC projects, so Manganiello’s return is far from confirmed.

Still, the actor has made clear that he would be interested. Manganiello said the Deathstroke helmet from his original appearance sits in his office and that he looks at it every day. He called playing the character the greatest achievement of his life.

“I’ve been to hell and back. You want a warrior? You know who to call.”

Whether that statement leads to a new appearance remains unknown. For now, Manganiello’s Deathstroke is remembered as a promising piece of a Batman film that never materialised, much like an unreleased game cabinet documented in an arcade video or a prototype preserved through specialist history.

For readers interested in the hardware side of gaming culture, a dedicated arcade machine can provide a physical centrepiece for a collection, while a compact bartop arcade suits smaller Australian homes and entertainment spaces.
