Avatar: Seven Havens creators confirm the map hides a major secret

Avatar: Seven Havens takes the bending saga into a dramatically altered future. Streaming on Paramount Plus, the series is set more than 200 years after The Legend of Korra, when humanity is no longer organised as four united nations. Instead, civilisation has fractured into seven fortified urban refuges known as the Seven Havens, each with its own culture and view of a damaged world.

The story centres on Pavi, a young earthbender from the walled city of Ellora, and her long-separated twin sister, Nisha. Both discover that they are the next Avatar at a time when the title is increasingly associated with destruction rather than salvation. Forced to escape human and spiritual threats, the sisters also begin investigating the truth about their origins.

Their companions include Jae, an airbender guard; Karthik, a guard captain; and Geet and Ruhi, cat-monkey companions voiced by franchise veteran Dee Bradley Baker.

That unusual setting has prompted one obvious question: why are there exactly seven Havens, and does their position on the map matter? At New York Comic Con 2026, showrunners Sehaj Sethi and Ethan Spaulding were asked whether the number and arrangement concealed a larger piece of Avatar mythology.

Ethan Spaulding: “There’s a reason.”

Sehaj Sethi: “There’s a reason. I don’t think we can say why yet.”

Ethan Spaulding: “I don’t think we can.”

Sehaj Sethi: “It is important.”

That is hardly a full explanation, but it does confirm that the number is deliberate. The creators did not validate any particular fan theory, leaving viewers to examine the series’ geography and its connections to the franchise’s spiritual history.

What could the Seven Havens represent?

A connection to the Lion Turtles

One theory links the Havens to the ancient Lion Turtles. Before Avatar Wan became the first Avatar, human communities lived on the backs of these enormous creatures, which protected them from the dangers of the spirit wilds. The idea is that some Havens may have been built on or near surviving Lion Turtles, making them natural sanctuaries in a devastated era.

It remains a particularly speculative possibility. Almost all Lion Turtles had been hunted to extinction long before Aang’s lifetime, leaving only one known survivor. Their seafaring nature also makes the theory difficult to reconcile with the locations shown in the new world map, although it would connect the modern refuges to the earliest human settlements.

Seven chakras and a spiritual journey

The number may instead have a spiritual purpose. Sethi has highlighted the series’ stronger South Asian influences and pointed to the chakra system introduced during Aang’s journey. Guru Pathik taught Aang how to access his chakras, while The Legend of Korra further explained their relationship with emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

That has led to a broader interpretation: perhaps each Haven reflects one of the seven chakras. If so, Pavi and Nisha’s journey between the cities could represent more than a trek across a divided civilisation. Each refuge might challenge them to confront a different part of their identity and their responsibilities as Avatars.

A world reshaped by spirits

Another possibility concerns the changing boundary between the physical and spirit worlds. By the end of The Legend of Korra, three spirit portals remain open: one at each pole and another in Republic City. Their presence permanently altered the relationship between people and spirits.

The Seven Havens may therefore be pockets of stability in a world transformed by that collision. The map shown in the series’ introduction places all seven settlements well away from the poles, assuming it is broadly accurate. Their distribution could show where human communities survived, while the dangerous territory between them allows hostile spirits, unstable technology and rival factions to develop.

That arrangement also gives Pavi and Nisha a reason to leave the safety of the cities and experience the full consequences of the world’s upheaval. For now, Sethi and Spaulding are keeping the explanation secret, but their brief exchange confirms that the map is more than background detail.
