Weekend viewing has plenty to offer, whether you are heading to the cinema or staying home with a streaming subscription. Tom Cruise’s Digger leads the theatrical releases, while Verity brings back the erotic-thriller formula with a struggling writer, an attractive father and his paralysed wife at the centre of its affair.

At home, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is now streaming, alongside a broad selection of horror, comedy, animation, drama and documentary films. Its unusual visual style has also prompted discussion of its opening credits and the production team’s use of matte painting to create its surreal world.

1. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA
  • Available on: Mubi
  • Genre: Horror
  • Runtime: 1h 52m
  • Director: Jane Schoenbrun
  • Cast: Hannah Einbinder, Gillian Anderson, Jack Haven

Kris, played by Hannah Einbinder, is an in-demand independent director who gets the opportunity to reboot the slasher series she loved growing up. Hoping to repair its reputation, she tracks down Billy Preston, the original film’s elusive final girl, portrayed by Gillian Anderson. Preston still lives at the abandoned camp used for the original production.

The film plays with the familiar rise, decline and eventual revival of long-running horror franchises. It also jokes about the increasingly extreme directions such series can take, including the possibility of sending a tired franchise into space.

2. Coyote vs. ACME

  • Available on: VOD
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Runtime: 1h 43m
  • Director: Dave Green
  • Cast: Lana Condor, Will Forte, Tone Bell

After years of failed rockets, anvils and other hazardous ACME inventions, Wile E. Coyote takes the company to court. He hires a struggling lawyer, played by Will Forte, to pursue the case in this live-action and animation hybrid.

The comedy moves quickly through physical gags, background jokes, one-liners and references aimed at Looney Tunes fans. Its rapid-fire approach recalls broad comedies such as Airplane! and The Naked Gun, with another joke usually arriving soon after a gag that misses.

3. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle I

  • Available on: Hulu
  • Genre: Animation
  • Runtime: 2h 35m
  • Director: Haruo Sotozaki
  • Cast: Natsuki Hanae, Akari Kito, Hiro Shimono

One of Japan’s biggest box-office successes, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle I continues the story after four anime seasons. The Demon Slayer Corps pursue Muzan through a pocket dimension, with this film serving as the first instalment in a planned trilogy.

Its major weakness is pacing: major action scenes are repeatedly interrupted by memories, flashbacks and character reflections. That structure is common in shonen storytelling, but the series uses those pauses effectively to build empathy for its heroes and even its flesh-eating demons.

4. The Uprising

  • Available on: VOD
  • Genre: Drama
  • Runtime: 2h 8m
  • Director: Paul Greengrass
  • Cast: Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell, Katherine Waterston

Set in England during the reign of 14-year-old King Richard II, The Uprising draws on the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. The Black Plague has devastated the country, taxes are increasing and a farmer, played by Andrew Garfield, kills a soldier in anger. His act helps ignite a revolt involving thousands of people demanding fairer treatment from the king.

5. Soulm8te

  • Available on: Hulu
  • Genre: Science fiction
  • Runtime: 1h 39m
  • Director: Kate Dolan
  • Cast: Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit

Set in the same world as the killer doll M3gan, Soulm8te combines artificial intelligence with the erotic-thriller tradition. A grieving engineer, played by David Rysdahl, creates an AI companion, voiced by Lily Sullivan, in the hope of building a genuinely sentient partner. The experiment does not unfold as he expects.

6. Evil Dead Burn

  • Available on: HBO Max
  • Genre: Horror
  • Runtime: 1h 50m
  • Director: Sébastien Vaniček
  • Cast: Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan

Evil Dead Burn follows Alice, played by Souheila Yacoub, after the death of her husband. While staying with her emotionally distant in-laws at an isolated house, she finds herself hunted by Deadites. Like recent entries in the series, the film favours graphic horror and a more grounded tone over the originals’ broader humour.

The film’s most effective qualities are technical. Its camera sweeps through the locations with restless energy, while overhead framing and extended takes give familiar final-girl-versus-Deadite confrontations a fresh shape. Detailed sound design also heightens the impact of its gruesome moments.

7. Lockbox

  • Available on: MGM+
  • Genre: Horror
  • Runtime: 1h 45m
  • Director: Daniel Stamm
  • Cast: Carla Gugino, Katherine Isabelle, Lou Taylor Pucci

Ellen, played by Carla Gugino, moves to a quiet town following her mother’s death and hopes for room to grieve. Her isolation is disrupted when her cousin arrives. A traumatised war veteran, he is withdrawn and behaves in increasingly strange ways.

The production was filmed on location and combines professional actors with local residents and counsellors connected to recovery services.
