Zach Cregger has found the lead for his next film. Jennifer Lawrence will star in The Flood, a closely guarded science-fiction thriller that Cregger is writing, producing and directing after the success of Resident Evil.

The casting was reported by Variety. Lawrence is best known for playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, a role she will reprise in Sunrise on the Reaping. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook.

Jennifer Lawrence leads The Flood

Lawrence’s previous work includes films with an unconventional edge, including Mother! from 2017 and Die My Love from 2025. That makes her an intriguing match for Cregger, whose recent projects have also combined genre filmmaking with challenging material.

Cregger’s 2025 film Weapons featured Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong among its ensemble cast. For The Flood, Lawrence is currently the only confirmed cast member. Cregger said he was “beyond excited” to see the actor take on the role, describing her as “one of a kind”.

What we know about The Flood

Plot details remain limited. Cregger has kept the project under wraps, although he told Men’s Health that the film shares similarities with 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also suggested that human nature and artificial intelligence could be central to the story.

The project is being released by Warner Bros., which also distributed Weapons. Production comes from Cregger, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

The Flood is scheduled for release on 11 August 2028. No Australian release details have been announced in the available information.

Cregger’s other upcoming projects

Cregger currently has no other directorial projects announced beyond The Flood. A Weapons prequel titled Gladys is in production and is also planned for 2028, but Cregger will not direct it.

There has been no official announcement of a sequel to Resident Evil. However, the film’s reported critical and commercial success makes a follow-up a possibility, even though Sony Pictures has not confirmed one.
