Directive 8020 is set to receive online co-op in October, bringing one of Supermassive Games’ choice-driven horror adventures to remote multiplayer just in time for Halloween season.
Supermassive Games announced the online multiplayer update in a post shared on X on September 30, 2026.
A space horror story built for shared decisions
The latest instalment in Supermassive’s anthology of interactive horror games moves beyond the familiar cabins and haunted camps. Players take control of adult crew members travelling on a space-colonisation mission. As the group approaches one of its possible new worlds, the expedition becomes a fight for survival.
As with the studio’s other narrative horror releases, the outcome depends on player choices. Directive 8020 supports up to five participants in Movie Night mode, allowing friends to decide what happens to the characters together on one screen.
At launch, however, the game did not include online multiplayer. Anyone wanting to play cooperatively had to meet in person, making the five-player experience dependent on having everyone in the same room. The October update should make the game easier to include in a remote gaming night.
Online multiplayer follows a difficult development period
Directive 8020 received mixed reviews and was not regarded as one of Supermassive’s most frightening releases. The game was originally expected in October 2025, but it was delayed until May 2026 after the studio went through layoffs in July of the previous year.
Supermassive later carried out another round of job cuts in August, with roughly 75 employees affected. The wider situation was reported at the time as the studio once again held layoffs in August.
Online co-op has no confirmed day yet
Supermassive has confirmed October as the release window for online co-op, but it has not announced an exact launch date. That timing places the update in the heart of the spooky season, potentially making it a timely choice for players planning a shared horror session.
For readers who enjoy multiplayer entertainment beyond story-driven horror, RETROCADE’s arcade machines and virtual pinball tables offer other ways to turn a games room into a social play space.
