The planned Helldivers film has reportedly found a new leading actor, with Reacher star Alan Ritchson set to replace Jason Momoa as humanity’s champion against the Terminids and Automatons.
The casting change is the latest development in the long-running effort to bring the PlayStation game to cinemas. The report comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says Momoa left the project because of “creative differences” with director Justin Lin. Momoa and Lin previously worked together on Fast X.
For Ritchson, the role would mark his first time leading a theatrical studio feature. His casting also gives the project a performer already associated with imposing physical roles, thanks to his work as Jack Reacher in Amazon’s adaptation of the novels by Lee Child.
What we know about the Helldivers film
Specific story details remain undisclosed. The film is currently scheduled for release on November 10, 2027, a date that leaves a relatively short window for production if it remains unchanged. Gary Dauberman reportedly wrote an earlier version of the screenplay and has also recently been hired to write Five Nights at Freddy’s 3.
The movie’s premise should offer plenty of room for large-scale science-fiction action: Helldivers pits humanity’s soldiers against the insect-like Terminids and the machine army known as the Automatons. For more gaming and industry updates, visit RETROCADE’s arcade news and features.
Could Ritchson suit the role?
Ritchson’s Reacher performance established him as a convincing screen fighter, particularly in scenes built around his imposing size and clashes with other physically formidable opponents. That makes him a practical fit for a military science-fiction story centred on relentless combat.
Momoa’s departure removes a recognisable name from the project, but Ritchson could push the adaptation towards the rougher, pulpy energy associated with a B-movie military adventure. That tone may work well for a game whose appeal is built around chaotic missions, exaggerated firepower and spectacular alien battles.
Whether the film reaches its planned release date, and how closely it reflects the game, remains unclear. In the meantime, readers interested in bringing arcade-style shooting action home can explore RETROCADE’s arcade light-gun machines, or browse the wider range of arcade cabinets.
