Nighthawks, a narrative-driven vampire RPG from Wadjet Eye Games, faced a serious Steam listing problem just days before its scheduled 22 September launch. The platform classified the game as adults only, removed it from search results and delisted it in some countries.

A damaging classification before launch

Dave Gilbert, founder of Wadjet Eye Games, said on Bluesky that Steam had misunderstood the nature of Nighthawks. He explained that Valve appeared to believe the game contained considerably more sexual content than it actually does.

The adults-only designation was particularly harmful because it reduced the game’s visibility at the most important point in its release campaign. Although other PC storefronts exist, Steam remains central to the commercial prospects of many independent games.

When a title disappears from Steam searches, potential players may struggle to find it even if they already know its name. Developers can also face uncertainty about whether changing content will resolve the issue, particularly when communication from the platform is limited.

This is not the first time Steam’s content classifications have created problems for developers. The incident also revived wider concerns about how the platform handles moderation and discoverability for smaller releases.

What content triggered the rating?

In an interview with PC Gamer, creator Richard Cobbett identified the likely source of the confusion. He described a small number of character shots, along with other censored sexual material, appearing mainly in companion romances and related scenes.

That relatively limited content was contrasted with Steam promoting a third-party adults-only event called Hentai vs. Furry on store pages. The contrast prompted criticism from observers who saw an inconsistency between the treatment of Nighthawks and the material receiving prominent promotion.

Gilbert said the team was working with Valve after the classification and regional delistings appeared.

Steam reverses the decision

The situation eventually ended in the developer’s favour. Steam removed the adults-only rating, restoring the intended classification before launch.

Gilbert described the episode as frightening while it was happening, but later judged the unexpected attention to be beneficial. The controversy brought Nighthawks to more people’s attention than the studio could have expected through its normal marketing.

He also made clear that a positive outcome did not make the disruption acceptable. The developer hopes not to face a similar situation again, particularly so close to release.

A wider lesson for digital storefronts

For independent developers, storefront visibility can be as important as the game itself. Search placement, regional availability and recommendation systems all influence whether a new release reaches an audience.

The episode is a useful reminder that content moderation decisions can have immediate commercial consequences, especially for smaller studios without the resources to absorb a launch disruption. Readers interested in the broader games business can follow more stories in the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

While Nighthawks is a PC RPG rather than an arcade title, its launch illustrates a familiar issue across gaming: discoverability shapes whether players ever get the chance to try a game.
