No Man’s Sky has reached an unlikely milestone: as of last month, Hello Games’ space exploration survival game was already ten years old. A decade of substantial, free updates has steadily expanded the experience far beyond its 2016 launch.

The latest expansion, Cosmos, arrived on September 9 and may be one of the game’s most ambitious updates yet. Its feature list includes a particularly dangerous new option: players can fly directly into the sun and burn themselves alive.

Claim a space station and build beyond the planets

The headline feature has two connected parts. Players can now claim space stations, then construct bases in open space rather than limiting their building projects to planetary surfaces.

This space station is the closest thing to a cyberpunk metropolis. And it’s beautiful.

Before Cosmos, construction was tied to planets. Now, the possibilities include asteroids, captured stations and the open void itself. In practical terms, almost any location can become a personal base, provided the player can afford the privilege.

A billion-unit price tag

Space construction is reserved for established players. Claiming a station reportedly costs one billion units, and players must reach reputation level 40 before they can earn access to the feature.

The reward is more than status. A station positioned near a valuable warp point can serve as an operations hub for expeditions. Players can also build in heavily visited areas, turning an already popular destination into a conspicuous display of wealth.

Popular stations may not stay available

There is one important reason to prepare before choosing a location. Members of the game’s Reddit community report that other players are tracking down popular locations and claiming them early. Gathering the required resources first may therefore save a great deal of frustration.

For arcade enthusiasts, the appeal is familiar: personalising a machine, cabinet or virtual space around a particular theme. RETROCADE’s arcade news and features explore similar ideas around player-created spaces, while our arcade machines and DIY arcade kits offer more tangible ways to build a gaming setup of your own.
