A brief stunt in the latest Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer has attracted almost as much attention as the game’s larger reveals. Jason runs from a pier, launches from both feet and rotates into a backflip before dropping into the bright blue water.
The animation looked unusual to many viewers, with some fans calling it stiff or simply “off”. Yet the move itself is not impossible. A skilled athlete has now recreated the same awkward-looking flip in real life, although the attempt also shows why it is well beyond most people’s abilities.
A small moment from a huge trailer
Rockstar released almost 30 minutes of GTA 6 gameplay footage on August 27. Fans spent the following days examining the extended presentation for details, and Jason’s pier stunt quickly became bit infamous online.
The backflip stood out because its movement does not appear as smooth as many of the trailer’s other animations. It became a talking point among fans, and was also one of the few moments that prompted negative reactions from people seeing the footage for the first time.
An athlete puts the animation to the test
One athlete and content creator set out to prove that this odd-looking backflip wasn’t impossible. After several attempts, they managed to reproduce the basic movement: a running approach, a two-foot take-off, a backward rotation and a deliberately slower-looking turn.
Content creator Aspen Tree appears to have considerable athletic ability, particularly when it comes to flips and other acrobatic movements. Even so, this specific version proved difficult to land. The combination of running, jumping from two feet and controlling the rotation makes the stunt much more demanding than it first appears on screen.
For anyone interested in how game movement is presented, the moment is a useful reminder that animation can look strange without representing something physically impossible. Just as an arcade news story can turn on a single frame, a brief animation can dominate discussion of an entire gameplay showcase.
Will Rockstar adjust the flip?
There are several possible explanations for Jason’s unusual movement. Perhaps he is meant to be more athletic than players currently realise. Maybe the character has an unexpected background in circus performance. The simpler answer is that this animation did not flow as naturally as the others and therefore attracted extra attention.
The open question is whether Rockstar will refine the stunt before GTA 6 launches on November 19. Players were still less than 70 days away from finding out when this discussion emerged. Until then, the backflip remains one of the trailer’s most memorable details—and a stunt best left to trained athletes.
