Gamescom may be over, but several hands-on discoveries from the event still deserve attention. These six upcoming Steam games stood out for their unusual settings, strong concepts and promising early gameplay.

1. Exterminauts
Behaviour Interactive’s Exterminauts is a co-operative player-versus-environment shooter built around chaotic alien combat. It follows the recent wave of team-based shooters while putting its own spin on the formula through a colourful science-fiction setting. After trying a round at Gamescom, the game made a strong early impression.

2. Wilderings: The Lost Spring
Herobeat Studios, the developer of Endling: Extinction is Forever, is taking a very different approach with Wilderings: The Lost Spring. The game combines action roguelike combat with creature collecting, creating a blend that brings together ideas associated with Hades and Pokémon.
Environmental restoration remains central to the experience, giving the action a broader purpose beyond surviving each run.

3. No Law
Neon Giant impressed with its 2021 debut, The Ascent, and its next project expands the studio’s ambitions. No Law is an immersive sim set in a cyberpunk city reclaimed by greenery and populated by dubious characters.
Player choice appears to have lasting consequences. A poorly aimed grenade that breaks a shopkeeper’s window, for example, can cause that business to close for the remainder of the game.
4. Guns of Eschaton
Guns of Eschaton offers a distinctive combination: first-person shooting, Soulslike systems and a post-apocalyptic Wild West setting. The project was conceived by the late Viktor Antonov, whose credits include work on major first-person shooters such as Half-Life 2.
His studio, Eschatology Entertainment, is continuing the project, which is scheduled to launch in December. The result is shaping up as an intense and unusual take on the genre.
5. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn
Owlcat Games, developer of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, is moving into another established science-fiction universe with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. This action RPG is set within the world of The Expanse book series and draws heavily on its detailed setting.
A Gamescom hands-on session highlighted the story’s political conflicts, an element likely to appeal to fans familiar with the series’ intricate power struggles.

6. Alien Deathstorm
Rebellion, the studio behind Sniper Elite, expanded beyond its usual territory with 2025’s Atomfall. Its next project, Alien Deathstorm, sends players to an alien-infested colony in a first-person shooter focused on hunting hostile creatures.
The early gameplay stood out for its responsive alien enemies. They can react to an aggressive, guns-blazing approach, making careful tactics as important as accurate shooting.
These six games cover co-operative shooting, immersive simulation, creature collecting, action RPG combat and more. They are all distinct enough to merit a place on a Steam wishlist while development continues.
