Tom Hiddleston’s next major streaming project has been confirmed. The actor will appear in Tenzing, an Apple TV biographical film about the historic 1953 Everest expedition.
Hiddleston has remained a familiar presence on both cinema and television screens since playing Loki in 2011’s Thor. Following his work in the Loki series and the second season of The Night Manager, he is now returning to streaming in a very different kind of role.
A new film about the Everest expedition
Tenzing focuses on Tenzing Norgay, the Nepalese Sherpa who guided New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary during their successful attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Hiddleston plays Hillary, while Chinese actor Genden Phuntsok portrays Norgay. Willem Dafoe also joins the cast as John Hunt, the British army officer who led the expedition.
The film is directed by Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom. Although this is her first narrative feature, Peedom has extensive documentary experience, particularly with mountain-climbing subjects. Her previous documentaries include Miracle on Everest (2008), Sherpa (2015), Mountain (2017) and Mountain Quest (2021).
Filming took place in Nepal
Peedom filmed portions of Tenzing around Mount Everest and in Kathmandu. Hiddleston said in a 2025 interview with Josh Horowitz that the production spent a month in Nepal, including time in the Khumbu Valley, the foothills of Everest and the wider Himalayas.
Hiddleston described the shoot as “the adventure of a lifetime”, adding that Everest had been a lifelong obsession for him. The location work should give the film an unusually direct connection to the landscape at the centre of its story.
When will Tenzing stream on Apple TV?
Tenzing will first receive a limited theatrical rollout. Its premiere is scheduled for 15 September at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a release in selected cinemas on 9 October.
The film will then arrive on Apple TV one week later, on 16 October. For viewers in Australia, that Apple TV date is the key streaming release currently confirmed.
The summit sequence will also draw interest because of the long-running question surrounding the 1953 ascent. Hillary and Norgay both declined to identify who reached the highest point first, although Norgay later revealed that Hillary took the first step onto the summit.
A dramatic story for the big screen
The combination of real Himalayan locations, Peedom’s documentary background and a cast led by Hiddleston gives Tenzing a clear focus on the people and environment behind one of mountaineering’s most famous achievements.
