Nvidia’s leaked DLSS 5 technology has quickly moved beyond game testing. After modders experimented with the generative AI upscaling system in a range of games, developers have now demonstrated what happens when it processes live webcam footage instead.
The results have not been consistently impressive. Some experiments produce blurry or artificial-looking images, while others veer into genuinely disturbing territory. Applying the effect to a real human face may be the most uncomfortable example yet.
DLSS 5 meets a live webcam
Developer jpneagle created a real-time filter that combines a webcam with Nvidia’s leaked Deep Learning Super Sampling technology. The demonstration shows DLSS 5 being applied to moving footage rather than rendered game graphics.

The project was made available through GitHub. However, jpneagle noted that the DLSS 5-related files were not included and asked users to obtain those files legally.
OBS and ReShade put the effect on a face
Another demonstration came from X user Samuel Cardillo, who showed DLSS 5 switching on and off across his own webcam feed. His setup used OBS, ReShade and a DLSS feeder.

The result is certainly striking, although the filter appears to exaggerate the crow’s-feet around his eyes. Instead of simply improving the lighting, the processing creates a noticeably altered version of the subject.
A curious use for leaked upscaling technology
Using DLSS 5 on a real person can look more convincing than some of its game-related experiments, but the underlying idea is not entirely new. Conventional camera and video filters already offer many ways to change lighting, skin texture and facial detail.
