The live-action God of War series has changed its Kratos casting, with Dave Bautista replacing Ryan Hurst. That shift has also raised a question for fans: why wasn’t Christopher Judge, the voice and performance-capture actor for Kratos in the modern games, taking the role?
Judge addressed the decision during a Fan Expo Canada panel, as part of the latest arcade gaming news. He believed Hurst was an excellent choice because Hurst had played all the games, understood the character as a gamer and was also a new father.
After Hurst was injured, Judge wondered whether the production would have enough time to audition and read with other actors. When Bautista’s name emerged, Judge recalled thinking about the actor’s recent weight loss and hoped that regaining the necessary size would not create health problems. He also said he expected Bautista to do a great job.
Why Christopher Judge stepped away from Kratos
Judge explained that the physical demands of leading a live-action series no longer appealed to him in his early 60s. Playing a god would have meant working 16-to-18-hour days, maintaining a strict diet and training constantly.
He briefly reconsidered after discussing the opportunity with his grandson. The possibility of creating a lasting legacy motivated him to work out, gain size and read for the part. However, the experience soon confirmed that the role was not right for him.
“I just have no desire to live that way again,” Judge said, reflecting on the demands of leading a production at 62 after previously carrying Stargate SG-1 from the ages of 33 to 44.
Reading for the role was particularly revealing. Judge said memorising lines became unusually difficult, despite never having struggled with it before. He took that as a sign from both his mind and body that he did not want to return to the lifestyle required of a lead actor on a demanding series.
The games will continue with Kratos
Judge’s decision does not remove Kratos from the game series. Sony Santa Monica has already revealed that God of War Laufey will not star Kratos, while another sequel in development will put the character back in the spotlight and seemingly feature Judge again.
For viewers tracking the adaptation, the immediate challenge is further production work. Episodes already completed with Hurst will need to be reshot with Bautista, leaving the series’ eventual air date uncertain.
