Ocarina of Time Mod Rebuilds Hyrule in True 3D

A fan-made project is giving The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time a striking visual overhaul by replacing many of its original 2D background scenes with fully rendered 3D environments.

What the OoT unJPEG mod changes

Modder Reonu has been developing the project for more than a year under the provisional name OoT unJPEG. Rather than copying the visual approach of the Nintendo 3DS version, the aim is to preserve the style of the original Nintendo 64 release while rebuilding its pre-rendered scenery in three dimensions.

Ocarina of Time used 2D images extensively for distant scenery and backgrounds, helping the Nintendo 64 work within its hardware limits. The technique was similar to a matte painting in an older film: a convincing vista could be shown without rendering the entire location as a live 3D space.

OoT unJPEG removes those flat images and substitutes complete 3D environments. Early comparisons show that the new geometry can create a stronger sense of depth, although some original scenes still look better because the mod currently relies on placeholder textures. Reonu has acknowledged that texture creation is not a personal strength and is seeking help from texture artists.

Designed for original Nintendo 64 hardware

The project is planned for the Zelda 64 Recompiled project as well as a ROM hack capable of running on real Nintendo 64 hardware. Achieving that has required custom CPU culling code written by Reonu, making the technical side of the project almost as notable as its visual changes.

The teaser also highlights performance work beyond simply converting backgrounds. The market area has been merged into one continuous environment, removing the loading screens used by the original game. If similar changes appear throughout the finished version, the mod could offer a notably different way to revisit Nintendo’s classic adventure.

No release date has been announced

OoT unJPEG does not yet have a release date. Fans interested in following its progress will need to monitor Reonu’s social media updates.

The project arrives as Nintendo is also preparing a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2. That official version and this hardware-focused fan project represent very different approaches to revisiting the same Nintendo 64 landmark.

Why this matters for retro gaming

Projects such as this show how modern tools can explore the design compromises behind classic console games without discarding their original identity. For Australian retro enthusiasts, it is another reminder that the hardware, rendering tricks and limitations of older systems remain fertile ground for experimentation.
