Leaked GTA 6 footage puts vehicle fuel in the spotlight

Gameplay clips circulating online over the past 48 hours appear to show Grand Theft Auto 6 featuring a vehicle-fuel system. If the mechanic remains in the finished game, drivers may need to stop at service stations and replenish their cars during longer journeys.

The possibility has quickly divided the GTA community. Some players welcome the additional planning and immersion, while others would prefer an option to disable fuel management entirely.

On 18 August, an account using the alias Cyberleek shared footage believed to come from an early build of GTA 6. The account also posted what appears to be the complete game map, followed by another gameplay clip on Wednesday.

Two of the leaked sequences seem to show a fuel indicator when Jason enters different vehicles. A meter surrounding the symbol appears to decrease over time, and the icon can reportedly be seen in both a semi-truck and a car.

That is not confirmation of a final feature. Leaked material may have been captured from an older version of the game, leaving the mechanic’s inclusion and operation unknown.

Even so, many fans are reading the gauge as evidence that fuel will need to be managed during the main game. A screenshot of the indicator, posted with the title FUEL? by u/Bullsht999 in GTA6unmoderated, became one of the community’s most active and highly rated posts, attracting more than 230 comments.

Why some players want fuel

Supporters argue that refuelling could make the map feel larger and encourage more deliberate route planning. A long drive would involve considering distance, location and the availability of nearby stations rather than simply holding the accelerator until the next objective.

That approach is already familiar to players who spend time on GTA roleplay servers. Fuel systems have been used in roleplay for years, and some players say they make the world feel more expansive while adding tactical decisions to everyday driving.

One roleplay player said that refuelling creates a stronger sense of distance, helps players understand where they are in the world and makes longer journeys more meaningful. Reactions posted on August 18, 2026 show how quickly the question spread across social media.

Why others want an off switch

Critics question whether regular fuel stops would improve an action-focused open world. Their concern is that having to refuel every so often could interrupt missions or exploration, particularly when the game makes the system mandatory.

Some fans have compared fuel management with hunger, hydration and equipment-durability systems in survival games. They may appreciate the option for players seeking extra realism, but would generally rather play without it. Others have reacted strongly to the possibility of a system without an off switch, as shown by one critical response and another negative reaction.

The most obvious compromise would be a toggle. Players who enjoy planning around fuel could leave the feature active, while anyone focused on missions and free-roaming could turn it off.

A debate that has followed GTA for years

Fans have discussed functional fuel stations throughout the series’ history. Gas stations appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V, prompting speculation that drivers might eventually need to fill their tanks. Neither game introduced mandatory refuelling, as discussions on fuel stations in GTA IV and GTA V demonstrate.

GTA 6 appears to be pursuing a more grounded direction, at least judging by the leaked footage. Vehicles seem heavier, combat appears slower and the world may respond more noticeably to player actions. The material has also suggested some form of morality system, along with influence from Rockstar’s other major open-world game, Red Dead Redemption II.

That broader emphasis on realism would make a fuel mechanic less unexpected. The challenge will be ensuring that it adds meaningful choices without turning routine travel into repetitive maintenance. When could Rockstar clarify the system?

More information may arrive later in August, when Rockstar is expected to present an extended look at GTA 6 through Netflix on 27 August. If that presentation does not explain the fuel gauge, the wait for answers may still be short: the game is scheduled to launch on Xbox and PlayStation 5 on 19 November.

Until Rockstar confirms the feature and its rules, the fuel indicator remains an interesting but unverified detail. Whatever the final decision, refuelling has already become one of the most divisive questions surrounding the highly anticipated sequel.
