A tiny Chinese animated film about a cow has become an unlikely box-office sensation, helped by social media, deliberately rough-looking animation and a shortage of official promotional material.

What is Niu Lai?

Niu Lai is the name of the film’s young cow protagonist. The title also translates roughly as “Here Comes the Cow” or “The Cow Comes”. Its story follows a young cow whose dream teaches it about becoming a brave and responsible adult.

The film was made on an exceptionally small budget by a mother-and-son team. Between them, they handled the production, animation and acting. One social-media post describes the budget as approximately US$200, while the available reporting consistently presents the project as a very low-budget production.

From rough animation to viral hit

The animation has an unmistakably unconventional appearance. Its strange character designs and unpolished movement turned Niu Lai into an online meme in China, with viewers sharing and praising its poor quality as part of the joke.

That attention has translated into a remarkable theatrical run. Tracking data from Mao Yan indicates that the film earned just 7,705 yuan, or about US$1,140, during its first 10 days. It has since passed 11.4 million yuan, approximately US$1.7 million.

The film’s popularity has also given it an unusual place in the conversation around generative AI in filmmaking. Its appeal comes from the visibly human, handmade limitations of the production, at a time when the industry is increasingly debating the use of AI-generated work.

Cinemas are drawing their own posters

Demand has become strong enough that cinemas in China are adding screenings. The catch is that Niu Lai apparently launched without a press kit, and its official promotional poster has not circulated widely.

To advertise screenings, cinema employees have been creating their own hand-drawn signs. The results range from cheerful cow illustrations to drawings that attempt to reproduce the film’s wonderfully unsettling visual style.

Niu Lai was released without a press kit, leaving Chinese cinemas to make their own posters. The handmade approach has become part of the film’s viral identity.

Some of the homemade artwork gives the cow a gentle, farming-game look, while other designs lean into the odd proportions and facial expressions seen in the film itself. The inconsistency is precisely what makes the posters so entertaining.

A handmade success in a highly polished industry

Niu Lai is an unusual reminder that audiences can respond to a film for reasons far beyond conventional production values. Its limited animation, improvised promotion and internet-fuelled reputation have combined to create a cultural moment no conventional marketing campaign could easily plan.

The story may also resonate with anyone interested in the personality of handmade game projects. From a small animated production to a carefully assembled DIY arcade kit, visible craft can be part of the appeal rather than something to hide. Watch the strange little film

The complete film is currently available on YouTube, although it does not include English subtitles. Viewers will need to follow the story through context and visual cues. The runtime is close to 90 minutes, giving the film plenty of time to introduce its unusual cast.

Alongside the cows, the story includes a pack of wolves that attacks them, a leopard that appears to be friendly towards the cows and a bird that also features in the action.
