Sydney Sweeney’s Gundam film takes shape

The long-planned live-action Gundam film has been developing in various forms since 2018. Although Sydney Sweeney and several other prominent cast members are attached, meaningful details about the adaptation have remained limited.

That changed slightly when Noah Centineo offered a brief description of the project during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Centineo characterised the movie as a “big action romance space movie”, later comparing its central premise to a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet set among the stars. His comments suggest a story about lovers caught on opposing sides of a long-running conflict.

That idea would sit comfortably within Mobile Suit Gundam’s established storytelling tradition. The franchise frequently places personal relationships inside the wider war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, particularly in its Universal Century continuity.

A Universal Century setting

Centineo also confirmed that the live-action film will take place in the Universal Century, the timeline used by many of the franchise’s best-known television series and films, including the original Gundam series.

The precise point in that timeline has not been disclosed. Concept art released in 2021 featured the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam from the original series, but that material was produced while Jordan Vogt-Roberts was still attached to direct. Vogt-Roberts was subsequently replaced by Jim Mickle.

For viewers drawn to the mechanical side of the franchise, the film’s Universal Century connection may be as significant as its cast. Gundam’s mobile suits, military factions and large-scale battles have long made it a natural fit for interactive entertainment and arcade and gaming news.

Sweeney and Centineo will be joined by Jason Isaacs, known for Star Trek: Discovery, and Michael Mando, who appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, among other cast members.

Netflix has not announced a release date. Filming finished only a few weeks before the report, at the end of July, so the project remains some distance from a confirmed launch.

More Gundam is on the way

The live-action movie is only one part of the franchise’s upcoming slate. The animated series Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is scheduled for release in 2027, while Gundam Rogue Orbit, a game set in the same universe as the show, is also due next year.

Whether the film ultimately leans more heavily into battlefield spectacle or its star-crossed relationship, the confirmed Universal Century setting gives it a clear connection to Gundam’s core mythology.
