The film follows Nike, a 15-year-old girl voiced by Mayu Hotta, who lives in a near-future society where people no longer need to work. Although her world is comfortable and carefully ordered, Nike grows dissatisfied and begins searching for something she considers real.

Much of the story takes place inside the Orthoverse, a virtual reality network where emotions can be seen. Nike is responsible for managing its “starry sky”, but her routine changes when she encounters an emotion called “Flower”. She initially dismisses it as rubbish, raising questions about what happens when feelings can be named, displayed and thrown away.

Why anime fans are watching Ghost: End of Night

Natsume has directed a wide range of acclaimed projects, including ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Boogiepop and Others and The Tatami Time Machine Blues. However, Sonny Boy offered the clearest example of his approach to original world-building.

That 2021 series placed a group of high school students in an alternate dimension and used its mysterious setting to examine loneliness, adolescence, free will and the difficult transition into adulthood. Its visual experimentation and willingness to leave major questions unresolved made it an unusually inward-looking anime.

Ghost: End of Night appears to be exploring similar territory through a different science-fiction premise. The project’s official description presents it as a story of “despair and prayer”, following Nike as she descends into darkness while reaching for beautiful things that are genuinely present. More broadly, the film aims to evoke the conflicting emotions people keep hidden.

The creative team adds to the film’s appeal. Natsume Ono, the character designer for ACCA, is creating the original character designs, while Madhouse is handling animation. The studio has also worked on Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Perfect Blue and Monster, as well as previous projects with Natsume.

Hitsujibungaku has recorded six original songs for the film, including the insert track “Sugar”. Musician Ohzora Kimishima is composing the score, marking his first anime feature scoring role after making his professional music debut. The soundtrack is being developed around the film itself rather than added only after the animation is complete.

That close relationship between sound and image may appeal to viewers who enjoy music-driven anime such as FLCL and Cowboy Bebop. In a translated post on X, Hitsujibungaku said the script repeatedly moved the band to tears.

Ghost: End of Night is due to premiere in Japanese theatres on 11 February 2027. No United States cinema date or streaming service has been announced, and international distribution details remain unavailable.

The film will also receive a manga adaptation before its theatrical release. Serialization is scheduled to begin in the September issue of Young Ace, which is due to reach Japanese shops later this month.

The available teasers, most of which run for roughly 30 seconds, reveal more atmosphere than plot. They show star-filled skies, dreamlike imagery and a world where feelings may take physical form. That limited information leaves plenty of room for the finished film to surprise audiences.
