Marvel Tokon Sales Spark Debate Over Its First-Week Performance

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls sold 485,000 copies during its first week, reopening a familiar question for modern fighting games: is that a disappointing launch or a solid foundation?

The figure, disclosed by Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics, covers sales recorded up to 12 August. PlayStation 5 accounted for 74 per cent of copies, while Steam represented the remaining 26 per cent. Elliot estimates that the game generated US$33 million in revenue.

PC problems may have limited Marvel Tokon’s reach

Elliot believes the launch could have been significantly stronger if the PC version had arrived in better condition. His estimate suggests the game might have reached one million first-week sales without the troubled Steam release.

The PC edition has been criticised for performance issues, bugs, intrusive digital rights management and the absence of Linux support. Its Steam user score improved from 37 per cent at launch to 48 per cent, but that still indicates a distinctly poor reception among PC players.

The situation is particularly relevant to the fighting-game audience, where reliable performance and responsive controls are central to competitive play. Readers comparing different ways to enjoy arcade-style games can also explore RETROCADE’s arcade news and gaming coverage.

Why some players are calling the result weak

Some observers have judged the sub-500,000 result against the much larger launches associated with major console releases. One response described the numbers as worrying, while one X user posted in response to the news that the figures did not look good. Another commenter called the result dreadful and compared the game with a failed live-service project.

Sales are also being assessed in the context of the game’s availability. Marvel Tokon cannot be purchased in dozens of countries, apparently because of its PlayStation Network linking requirements. That restriction is an awkward fit for a genre built around international competition and online communities.

A fighting game does not need blockbuster numbers to survive

Raw sales do not tell the entire story for a one-versus-one fighting game. These titles can remain viable with fewer active players than many other multiplayer genres, provided matchmaking stays healthy and the developer continues to support the game.

Marvel Tokon has also benefited from a gradual change in opinion about its gameplay. Players who were initially unconvinced have increasingly recognised its depth and its distinctive approach to tag-team fighting. At this weekend’s CEO tournament, it has the second-highest number of registrants, behind only Street Fighter 6.

The first-week total is a warning sign for the launch, but it is not by itself a final verdict on the game’s future.

What happens next?

Arc System Works has a clear opportunity to improve the game’s prospects by addressing the PC port’s technical faults and making the title easier to access internationally. If those problems are resolved, the existing audience, tournament interest and underlying gameplay depth could give Marvel Tokon room to build a durable community.
