Spider-Man Brand New Day Post-Credits Scene Explained

Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives Peter Parker a major adventure alongside the Hulk and the Punisher, with action, villain twists and emotional payoffs for its central characters. Its post-credits scene is much smaller than the film itself, but it may point towards Spider-Man’s place in Marvel’s next major crossover.

Here is what the scene shows, and what its unusual location could mean for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s post-credits scene explained

The film does not include a mid-credits scene. Instead, viewers who wait until the end see Ned’s “Spidey Tracker” app receive another Spider-Man sighting.

Ned created the app so people could report sightings of Spider-Man. Earlier in the film, he insists that the idea is not creepy because he simply wants to thank Spider-Man for repeatedly saving him and his classmates.

The final scene returns to the app’s map. It first displays New York, then pulls back to show the whole planet. The view continues away from Earth, passes the Moon and places the reported Spider-Man sighting somewhere in space.

Then the scene stops without offering an explanation.

Does the scene connect to Avengers: Doomsday?

The most immediate possibility is that the sequence sets up either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Doomsday is scheduled to reach cinemas in December, but Tom Holland has not been confirmed as part of its cast. He could appear as a surprise, although that may not be known until the film is released.

If the scene is pointing to Doomsday, Spider-Man’s location creates an obvious question: why would Peter be in space? The Fantastic Four are established as arriving from space at the end of Thunderbolts*, yet the available Doomsday trailers appear largely grounded on Earth. Even footage that may involve other dimensions seems to show alternate versions of Earth rather than deep space.

What might Secret Wars have to do with it?

Secret Wars appears to be the more likely destination for this tease, although it does not solve the location mystery.

The film is expected to draw from Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars storyline. In that comic event, the main Marvel universe combines with alternate realities, including the Ultimate universe. That process ultimately helps explain how Miles Morales becomes part of Marvel’s primary universe.

The cinematic version is also expected to bring together the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the former Fox X-Men universe and the reality inhabited by the Fantastic Four in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

However, the 2015 comic is primarily set on Earth. The collision between realities happens at an incursion point, which makes Spider-Man’s apparent journey into space seem just as puzzling.

Could Spider-Man be heading to Battleworld?

Another explanation may come from the original 1980s Secret Wars story. In that version, Marvel heroes and villains are taken to a distant planet called Battleworld, where they fight for the entertainment of the powerful Beyonder.

Spider-Man has an important role in that story. It is also where he first acquires his black suit, which is later revealed to be the symbiote known as Venom.

If the film combines ideas from both Secret Wars comics, the Spidey Tracker may be hinting at a Battleworld-style setting rather than simply showing Peter travelling through ordinary outer space.

There is also a less literal possibility. “In space” might simply mean “beyond Earth”, referring to the multiversal territory explored by Doomsday and Secret Wars rather than identifying Peter’s precise physical location.

Who reported the Spider-Man sighting?

The scene leaves one particularly amusing question unanswered: who logged the sighting?

If Spider-Man is involved in an Avengers mission against Doctor Doom, the heroes would presumably have more urgent concerns than checking their phones to report a fresh appearance. The identity of the person using Ned’s app could become a small joke, a plot clue or simply an intentionally unresolved detail.
