Arcade sequels often take longer to arrive than follow-ups in film or console gaming. A successful cabinet can continue earning for years after launch, reducing the pressure to replace it quickly. Bandai Namco Amusement is nevertheless exploring another sequel from its 2010s catalogue after announcing Dead Heat Unleashed, a continuation of the 2010 racing game Dead Heat.
GoldStorm Pirates appears in Japan
The new project is currently known as GoldStorm Pirates, drawing on the 2010 arcade shooter DeadStorm Pirates. Early evidence comes from this tweet, which shows the test cabinet’s marquee and part of its attract sequence. Since this is an early location test, the name and presentation should be treated as provisional.
Japanese arcade player Game Room Aries later visited the test and provided more information in this tweet. The machine is an environmental deluxe cabinet: a largely enclosed sit-down unit. Its controls appear to retain the original arrangement of two mounted guns and one steering wheel.
Part of the wheel shown in this photo appears more detailed than the original control. The cabinet also adds wind effects alongside a motion seat, with surround sound included as part of the deluxe setup.
New characters are visible on the enclosure’s sides and rear. The rear section has an unusual three-dimensional appearance, as seen in a photo of the prototype’s design. That styling may also change before the game is finalised.
Release timing remains uncertain
Bandai Namco Amusement America confirmed that GoldStorm Pirates is a genuine project. However, it is not expected to reach arcades soon. The company indicated that a release would be more than a year away if the game successfully passes testing, making this one of the earliest public glimpses of the project.
Arcade operators and collectors should therefore avoid treating the current cabinet as a final product. Internet sharing has made it easier for location tests to surface, even though some games can test quietly for years without attracting public attention.
What could change from DeadStorm Pirates?
The basic control concept may remain familiar, with two cannons and a pirate-ship steering wheel carried over from DeadStorm Pirates. The available imagery also suggests a stronger focus on gold or treasure, although the gameplay has not yet been documented in detail.
The original game appeared in several cabinet formats: an initial deluxe environmental version, a motion-seat model, a smaller standard upright cabinet and a rare 4D Super Deluxe version. A major software update titled Special Edition later added two more levels.
It remains unknown whether GoldStorm Pirates will receive multiple cabinet designs or a similar post-launch upgrade. Its current environmental deluxe format, motion system and wind effects make it particularly relevant to fans of immersive driving and simulator cabinets, while the two-gun layout places it firmly in the arcade shooter tradition.
Why the test matters
For Australian arcade fans, the project is a reminder that large-format arcade development continues well beyond the classic era. A location test can reveal the direction of a cabinet, but it does not guarantee a final launch, local distribution or an unchanged design.
As more information emerges, the key questions will be whether the controls stay intact, how the treasure-focused theme affects the stages, and whether Bandai Namco Amusement expands the game into additional cabinet formats.
